Transition Year Sports Coaching module

26 April 2018

Our TY Sports Coaches are coming to the end of another very successful year. For the last three years incoming transition year students have had the option to choose one of three modules to take during the year, Mini Company, Film Studies, or Sports Coaching.

The Sports Coaching module gives the students the opportunity to learn the art of coaching and to use these newly acquired skills in helping to coach pupils from local primary schools. Over the last three years students have worked with members of the PE department and fully trained coaches from the IRFU, FAI, & GAA in order to learn the basic skills of each sport and the attributes needed to become a coach.

This year the students started the year with football and worked with Mr O'Neill, a FAI qualified coach. After Christmas they moved on to GAA football and got to work with Carol Nolan, the games promotion officer from Ballinteer St Johns GAA club. After both these blocks out TY Coaches went out to, The Good Shepherd National School, Rathfarnham Educate Together, Our Ladys Boys National School & St Louis Senior Primary School, where they spent five weeks coaching pupils from 1st class to 4th class in the different sports.

They will be finishing up the year by helping to organise a special needs tag rugby tournament to be held on the school grounds on the 5th May.

As a school we would like to give special thanks to the principals and teachers of the primary schools for providing our students the opportunity to give back to their community by helping to give their love of sport to the next generation. We would also like to thank Carol Nolan of Ballinteer St Johns GAA club for facilitating the GAA element of the module.
