Spring Letter to Parents

26 February 2014

As we return to the College for the Spring Term it is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the death of Mr Louis Quinless over the mid-term break. Louis worked for many years as caretaker in the College. In more recent times he opened and locked the College each morning and evening and generally helped out with evening activities in the College and in the Gym. Louis passed away last week after a short illness. We shall all miss his presence here in the College and in the local community where he was well known, admired and respected. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis.

The 6th Year and 3rd Year students have just started their 'Mock' Examinations and will be getting their results over the weeks. There is much to be gained from a careful analysis of the corrected papers. Students should now prioritise the work that is needed in each subject area and plan to study and revise their work accordingly. After-school study continues and if not already doing so, your son should consider availing of this option. Our experience has been that those who engage in after-school study perform to their potential in the State Examinations.

The 3rd Year students will shortly be formally entering for the Junior Certificate Examination. They will be required to indicate which subjects and the levels [Higher or Ordinary] they will be sitting in each subject. Once they have done this, they will not be able to change their mind in June. Therefore, they should seek the advice of their subject teachers and discuss this matter with you. In this regard, pay particular attention to any comments made by the teachers in the Mock Examination Reports.

Congratulations are due to our Under 14 Badminton Team of Thomas McTague, Raemer Tolentino, Gerard McTague and Rian Torres who won the Dublin Schools Division 4 Championship. In athletics our Junior Boys team won the East Leinster Cross Country Championship in Rathdrum. The team of Daniel McDermot, Luke Nolan, Gerard McTague and Rian Torres performed superbly on the day to win convincingly. Training for the East Leinster Track and Field Championships takes place every Tuesday after school and all are welcome.

The College Band 'Mustang Salle' played a very successful concert in the College just before the mid-term break. They played a warm up gig for 'Deja Boo' a well known Dublin professional band. It was a great opportunity for our students to perform live on stage and to learn from a professional group. Many thanks to all those parents and students who supported this venture. Over the mid-term break a very successful ski trip was enjoyed by a group of 29 Transition Year and 5th Year students and 3 teachers to Andorra. A report of this will feature on the website.

Upcoming events include:

  • The Subjects Night for Transition Year students and their parents will be held on Thursday  20th March at 7pm in the College.

  • St Patrick's Day - no school on Monday 17th March.

  • The Parents Association will host a Careers Night for Transition and 5th Year students on Thursday 27th March. Please encourage your son to attend.

  • The College will close for Easter on Friday 18th April and will re-open for the Summer Term on Monday 28th April 2014.
